Getting Your Video Reviews

Video reviews are invaluable for your business. We can help you promote these all over the web so that your customers get you more customers. All you need to do is film a handful of people for between 9-45 seconds each.

Take another minute or two to upload the videos to your YouTube channel. That’s all.

Note: you don’t want people to look like actors. You want them to look natural. So don’t try and get perfect videos as they’re not so convincing.

five-star-rating-and-how-to-get-itIn a nutshell:

THE 5W REVIEW INTERVIEW:

The 5Ws to remember when filming every video review are

  1. Words (keywords)
  2. Who
  3. Where
  4. What
  5. Why

Start with a big beaming smile and hold for 2 seconds

End with the same and hold for 4 seconds

When filming allow the lower third of the screen to be nonessential so that you can if you want superimpose text over it.

Allow a few inches of headroom above the top of the head in the shot

Shoot landscape not portrait.

More info:

You can use your smartphone or tablet. The content is much more important than the equipment.

You do not need to edit the video. Always shoot at least 2 and up to 5 reviews per person – they only want to be between 9-45 seconds each.

To achieve 6 video reviews in one shot (pardon the pun), you want to aim to have 7 people (clients/customers) for one hour, together. Alternatively, pick good looking people who are customers or who know your business and just ask them.

Expect to have to persuade them – something like,

“…oh thank you so much for saying such lovely things…you look so great, can I just catch that on video for 20 seconds?”

Say this while you’re bringing out your smart phone or tablet and turning it on to video, smiling encouragingly. You need to persuade people because otherwise they think they might look a bit “big headed” if they appear too keen to get on film!

“It’ll only take a minute and if you don’t like it, we won’t use it…Now can you say that again please?”

Film!

“That was great – can we get it once more? I’d love you to say your name and where you’re from first, then what you like – why you came today and how you feel now…” – or something similar, appropriate to your business and the person/people in front of you.

More details:

  • Allow plenty of time to get setup – especially if you need to travel, park, setup and brief people prior to filming
  • All girls will want to use make up including a pinky-rosy or red lipstick, as the camera drains colour from the face
  • The decision maker or a confident and capable member of staff is needed throughout as project manager
  • Ideally also film the principal or 2 members of staff if available
  • You need to film in a place which is clearly and identifiably at the business
  • You need to turn off air conditioning, fans, music and minimise background noise
  • You need to be able to make some noise
  • Light – you will need lots of light: daylight is fine, otherwise switch on ALL the lights if inside and if possible stand by a window

If you want to get enough video reviews all in one go, allow for 1 hour availability + 15 mins prior set up, 15 minutes briefing

Allow 9-45 seconds per review video.

(Optional Plus – 3-6 seconds for Vine if wanted to use on Twitter)

(Optional Plus – 3-15 seconds for Instagram if wanted)

(Optional Plus – film staff for 20-45 seconds each)

Always take at least 2 videos of each person: “That was great – can we do that just one more time to make sure we have everything?

Brief as a group if you have more than one person.

  • So you’re going to say who you are,
  • Where you come from/your job title if staff
  • What you want to achieve

How not to do it:

Patio contractors: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eoVX-9YwybM – this is how not to do it as too long, without lower third info etc and interviewer makes it too formal/staged.

THE 5W REVIEW INTERVIEW:

The 5Ws to use in every video recording are

  1. Words (keywords)
  2. Who
  3. Where
  4. What
  5. Why

eg for a Spa on the Gold Coast:

eg KeyWords: day spa, Gold Coast, Gold Coast spa suite/retreat/rooms/review, surfers paradise spa/spa resort, spa surfers paradise, day spa surfers paradise, (name of) resort and spa, (name of suburb and town), best spa treatments

Example script

Who you are – in context: Hi, I’m Angela Wright and I’ve visited spas all around the world looking for solutions to poor circulation and rosacea on my face

Where you are from – I live in Noosa and whenever I come to the Gold Coast I like to come to the (name of) day spa on Surfers Paradise – it’s the top spa in Australia

What benefits you received – The massages work really well on my poor circulation. I love this spa because everything is calm and tranquil, I can always see the same therapist who understands me and the treatments are always on time

Why – After my treatments i always feel so much lighter and relaxed – I seem to have much more energy the next day and for quite a while afterwards – I always get loads of compliments and people even ask if I’ve been away on holiday because I look really well. I really recommend the (name of) day spa.

The key is to relax – look into the camera and imagine you are talking with your Mum!

ALWAYS take the first name, last name, job title if staff, home town & country if a customer, email address, note the month and year. You can add this info later to the Smartsheet alongside the link to the uploaded video.

Upload all to your Company YouTube Channel as PUBLIC and put the link in your Smartsheet.

Have fun, make the videos as natural as possible – you want the reviewers to look like real people not actors, encourage your client to subsequently film more videos and keep uploading them…
